Base of the People's Navy
After the end of the war, the facilities on the Hohe Düne were largely destroyed. With the exception of a naval signal point of the Soviet Navy , the area was used for civilian purposes.
With the establishment of the naval forces of the National People's Army of the GDR , initially as the Seepolizei headquarters , from 1960 referred to as the People's Navy , the construction of the Hohe Düne naval base on the north bank of the Breitling began. It was the home port for the 4th Flotilla of the People's Navy, the 6th Coastal Border Brigade and parts of the GDR Sea Hydrographic Service . In the course of time the following were stationed there:

Organization and subordination
A naval base command was set up from 1991 to 1994 and from 2001 to manage the Warnemünde naval base. It was initially subordinated to the Rostock naval command. From 1994 to 2001 the base formed an independent service under the Naval Section Command East . With its dissolution in 2001, the subordination initially moved to the Naval Section Command West and after its decommissioning in 2003 to the Naval Base Command Wilhelmshaven .
Since July 1, 2006 which is under a naval base command Warnemünde the Flotilla 1 in Kiel .
Supported associations and units
A number of changing naval associations and units were stationed at the base and in the Warnemünde siting area, which were supported by the base, but not under the command of the naval base. From 1990 onwards, there were still remnants of the People's Navy at the base, whose roadworthy units were combined in a coast guard squadron . This squadron was disbanded by the end of 1991 and its vehicles were either decommissioned or surrendered. In addition, on April 1, 1991, marine material depot 3 was placed under the command of the Warnemünde naval base . On January 1, 1995, it moved to the Naval Section Command East.
In the course of the reorganization of the navy after reunification, it was decided to make the Warnemünde naval base the new type base of the Schnellbootflotille , which was previously located at the Flensburg-Mürwik naval base . Their staff moved from Flensburg to Warnemünde in September 1994 . It was followed in November 1994 by the 2nd Schnellbootgeschwader and in December 1995 by the 7th Schnellbootgeschwader. In addition, auxiliary ships of the supply squadron were stationed in Warnemünde. In 2006 the Schnellbootflotille and the 2nd Schnellbootgeschwader were dissolved and the 1st Corvette Squadron was set up. In 2016, with the decommissioning of the last speedboat, the 7th Schnellbootgeschwader was disbanded, the two tenders were transferred to the newly established support squadron , so that the following commands and ships are now stationed at the Warnemünde base:
In addition, the Bundespolizeiinspektion See Warnemünde with several guard boats is located at the base .
