The tender of the class 404 , also same class called, are supply ships of the German navy . They are subordinate to the operational flotilla 1 .

The German Navy owns six class 404 tenders, which are named after larger German rivers. Administratively, the tenders are classified as boats and are at company level in the military hierarchy .

task

The tenders serve as support ships for the boat squadrons of the German Navy. They supply fighting units ( corvettes , minesweepers and submarines ) at sea with fuel, water, food, spare parts and ammunition. At the same time, they are used for disposal, for which they are equipped with a waste disposal facility and a waste water treatment system.

About 30 specialists from the System Support Group (SUG) are available for repair work on the boats at sea and in the operational area. In addition, the tenders can accommodate a squadron staff and serve as a command platform for the respective squadron. The infirmary on board is able to treat minor wounds. In addition, it is possible to treat more serious wounds with doctors on board in the infirmary.

The flight deck at the stern of the tender allows take-offs and landings of helicopters . However, the tenders are not suitable for accommodating and maintaining helicopters, as they do not have a hangar and therefore cannot carry an on-board maintenance group.

Units, association membership and locations

The six tenders are divided between two squadrons. While the Tender Elbe (A 511), Mosel (A 512), Rhine (A 513), Werra (A 514) and Danube (A 516) are subordinate to the support squadron, the Tender Main (A 515) belongs to the 1st submarine squadron .

On July 5, about 20 nautical miles off the coast of Libya, 656 people were rescued from four unseaworthy rubber dinghies from distress. On July 6, 2016, a rescued woman gave birth to a healthy boy on board the Werra . On October 30, 2016 the Werra was replaced by the Main tender and returned to its home port of Kiel on November 11.

On February 2, 2019, the Werra left for the Mediterranean. The tender provided the German contribution to NATO's Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2 for the next five months.
