The Berlin is a task force supply of the German Navy of the type EGV 702 , also Berlin class. She is the lead ship of this class and the ninth warship of this name .

history

The Berlin was built at the shipyard of the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft , christened on April 30, 1999 by Monika Diepgen, wife of the former governing mayor of Berlin , Eberhard Diepgen , and put into service on April 11, 2001.

On September 24, 2009, after three years as commander , frigate captain Hans-Günther Struck handed the Berlin over to his successor, frigate captain Martin Waldmann.

On November 22, 2012, frigate captain Martin Waldmann handed over command of the Berlin to frigate captain Marcel Rosenbohm.

On March 31, 2016, Frigate Captain Rosenbohm handed over command to Frigate Captain Sven Hikele.

In September 2016 the Berlin underwent a one and a half year overhaul in the Norderwerft in Hamburg .

On August 19, 2019, frigate captain Stefan Klatt took over command of the task force supply.

tasks

The task of the Berlin is to (re) supply an association of warships with water, fuel, food, ammunition and other supplies. This can significantly extend the durability of associations, i.e. H. the port idle times for picking up supplies will be shortened.

Refueling at sea

As a rule, cargo handover at sea does not take place. In contrast, the refueling of ships belonging to the association is routine. The procedure was first tested in 1975 with the Mölders destroyer. The appropriate device and the corresponding dishes are successfully in use today.

Additional medical service component

In addition, Berlin has a military hospital housed in a container system , the Marine Rescue Center (MERZ), which has approximately the treatment capacity of 45 patients and an additional nine patients in isolation , with additional capacity for up to 100 slightly injured people in the EGV's helicopter hangar can be. Injured soldiers are usually brought on board in their own or third-party helicopters, treated there and, if possible, flown to their home countries. The container system consists of operating theaters and intensive care rooms, a clinical and a microbiological laboratory, as well as sterilizers and workshops for the support group.

Special missions

During a deployment in Operation Atalanta to combat piracy in the Horn of Africa in 2012, the Berlin was used directly against pirates in addition to its support tasks. The Indian dhow Ashma and its 25 crew members were successfully freed from pirates.
