The frigate Hessen (F 221) was built between 2001 and 2005 by the North Sea Works in Emden and was officially put into service on April 21, 2006 in Wilhelmshaven as the third ship of the Sachsen class . Their main task is air defense - i.e. fighting aircraft and other air targets - to protect naval units and allied forces on land. To do this, it is equipped with very powerful radars and long-range missiles. You can also perform management tasks within a warship formation.

With its name, it continues a tradition in which the destroyer Hessen (D 184) , which was decommissioned in 1990, is and which can be returned to the liner SMS Hessen .
