APAR is the name of a multifunction radar made by Thales . The word APAR is an abbreviation and is written out as Active Phased Array Radar, both for the Thales product and for a general functional principle of radar technology, based on an Active Electronically Scanned Array .

Designed for use on warships, this modern multifunctional radar is one of the most powerful tactical radar systems in the world. The German-Dutch APAR is comparable to the American AN / SPY-1 .

development

The APAR system was developed by the Dutch tracking device manufacturer Signaal , which is now part of the French Thales group .

technology

The APAR does not use a rotating antenna , but four planar fixed phased array antennas , each with more than 3000 very small transmitter / receiver elements, which divide the azimuth range into four 90 ° sectors . All antennas can examine their sectors at the same time and also track many sea and air destinations within each sector at the same time. The number of automatically trackable targets is 1000, the number of targets that can be combated at the same time is around 60. The data obtained are passed on to a command and weapon deployment system . The receiver modules of the radar are produced by the American company Sanmina .
