Herbert Bernig

Herbert Bernig (born October 6, 1931 in Reichenau i. Saxony ; † January 22, 2020 ) was an officer in the People's Navy of the National People's Army of the German Democratic Republic . Most recently he held the rank of rear admiral .

Life

As the son of a worker, he attended elementary school until 1945 and then worked as a farm worker and fitter until 1947. He then took up an apprenticeship as a machine fitter, which he successfully completed in 1950. In 1950 he became secretary of the FDJ district leadership in Zittau .

On August 4, 1950, Bernig joined the Maritime Police , which later became the See People's Police . There he attended the Maritime Police School in Parow until 1951 . In 1951 he joined the SED . In 1952 he was sent to a special course in the Soviet Union , which lasted until 1954. Subsequently he was a senior officer with the head of the reconnaissance department of the People's Police Sea until 1956. From 1956 to 1960 he attended the Naval War Academy in the Soviet Union. After his return, Bernig became Deputy Chief and Chief of Staff of the 4th Flotilla of the People's Navy. He held this position from 1960 to 1964. He was then head of this flotilla until 1971 .

From 1971 to 1975 Bernig was Deputy Chief of Staff for Operational Work in the command of the People's Navy. From 1975 until his discharge from military service on September 30, 1990, he was head of the Sea Hydrographic Service in the GDR . His appointment as rear admiral took place on October 7, 1988 on the occasion of the 39th anniversary of the GDR.

Bernig was a member of the Initiative Group for the Protection of Social Rights (ISOR) and most recently lived in Rostock.
