Location of Parow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Parow is a small town in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , about five kilometers north of Stralsund and near the Strelasund , the strait between Rügen and the mainland. Parow belongs to the municipality of Kramerhof in the Altenpleen district .

history

The name Parow comes from Slavonic . The history of the place goes back to the 14th century, when the Parow manor , which at that time still belonged to Stralsund, was removed and became the property of Wizlaw III. passed over from Rügen. In the 16th century, the place was divided into small and large Parow and owned by Stralsund councilors. In the middle of the 18th century the estate passed into the possession of the Barons von Langen ; her most famous offspring was Carl-Friedrich von Langen , who became Olympic champion in dressage in 1928 .

Naval location

The marine port of Parow

Parow is one of the oldest naval and naval aviation locations in Germany. Naval aviators were stationed here in both World War I and World War II .

The People's Navy of the GDR had its Marine Helicopter Squadron (MHG) 18 stationed here. The German Navy continued to operate the unit as a naval pilot helicopter group until 1994 . In addition, the "Walter Steffens" fleet school was located here , where NCOs and sailors were trained for the crews of the ships and boats of the People's Navy. Today one of the German Navy's training facilities, the Naval Technology School , is located here.

The LSV Parow military football club existed from 1936 to 1944 .
