The "Walter Steffens" fleet school in Parow was used to train mates (NCOs) and sailors ( crews ) in the GDR People's Navy . It was founded in 1950 as the Parow Sea Police School and renamed the Walter Steffens Fleet School on December 1, 1970 . It existed until reunification in 1990. From 1992 the establishment of the naval technology school of the German Navy began on its premises .
history
On March 1, 1950, Walter Steffens was commissioned to set up a sea police school on a former sea air base near Parow . The arrival of the first recruits on August 1, 1950 marked the official opening date. Walter Steffens , with the rank of maritime police inspector , was the first head of the facility.
education
From 1970 training was given in various fields for:
- Maritime and weapons technology careers
- Radio and radio engineering careers
- Machine-technical careers
- University entrance qualification for officer students in the Navy (possibly for a later study at an officers college in the GDR )
Various training ships were parked for the school, including a .:
- Anti-mine ship, type 43
- Anti-mine ship, Schwalbe class
- Anti-mine ship, hawk class
- Anti-mine ship, Krake class 1970–1976
- Anti-mine ship, Condor class
- Anti-mine ship, Condor II class
- Torpedo speedboat, TSB Project 206
- High-speed rocket boat, Osa class
During the time of the mate or Unterführer training, the soldiers concerned carried the rank of mate pupil (OR-3).
Duration of training
The training times were six months for sailors and 10 months for mates . From 1984 the training times were shortened by two months. The Walter Steffens fleet school and its predecessor the Seepolizeischule trained all crews and NCOs in the People's Navy between 1950 and 1990 .
The fleet school was not taken over into the Bundeswehr on October 3, 1990 by order 96/90 of the chief of the Volksmarine and was thus effectively dissolved. The area has been used by the marine engineering school since 1992 .
