Overview of the place Messejana

history

The name of the place comes from the Arabic masjana , which means prison or dungeon. Connected with the verb sajana (for to lock up). The Arab rule was ended here in 1235 by the troops of Dom Sancho II .

Messejana was an important place in the Middle Ages and had 11 churches and 3 other chapels. Today only 4 churches remain:

  • The main church of the place,
  • the church of the Misericórdia,
  • the Church of the N. Senhora d'Assunção and
  • the church of Santos Reis.

As well as the chapel of Aldeia dos Elvas.

There are also remains of a medieval castle and a clock tower. The monastery of Fontanário de Alonso Gomes is also in ruins. There is also an ethnographic museum with an attached public library.

The Count of Terceira was in Messejana with his war power and united his advisors on July 17, 1833 to discuss the conquest of Lisbon , which then took place successfully on July 24, 1833 and ended with a victory for the liberal forces.
