Egon Nitz

Egon Nitz (born May 9, 1934 in Bublitz ; † May 19, 2011 ) was a German rear admiral in the People's Navy .

Military career

After attending school, the son of a journeyman miller learned the profession of lathe operator from 1949 to 1952 and then began studying at the engineering school for power and work machines in Meißen . On January 20, 1953, he joined the armed organs of the GDR and was a student ("Kursant") at the marine officer training institute of the People's Police See . From 1955 to 1956 he was a platoon leader at this institution. In 1956 he joined the SED and completed a course at a military academy in the Soviet Union from 1957 to 1959 .

From 1960 he served in the naval forces of the GDR (called Volksmarine from 1961) as an officer in the field of torpedo boats and speedboats . He held various positions, including navigation officer, staff, department and brigade chief. From 1964 to 1968 another academy training followed in the Soviet Union. He was then head of the Missile Speedboat Brigade until 1971 and then until 1972 the boss of the 1st Missile Torpedo Speedboat Brigade in the 6th Flotilla .

In 1972 Nitz became chief of staff at the "Walter Steffens" fleet school in Parow. In 1983 he was officially appointed as the successor to Rear Admiral Rudi Wegner as its commander, after he had been entrusted with the management of this school from 1973 to 1974. He was appointed Rear Admiral on March 1, 1987 and retired on September 30, 1990. Then he was active in the newly founded Stralsund naval officers' fair .
