The Libbertsee is a brackish water lake in the north of the Darß peninsula on Darßer Ort in the Born a. Darß in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
The lake has an east-west extension of about 750 meters and is up to 350 meters wide. The water has a circumference of about two and a half kilometers.
The lake was created by the progressive sand deposition and spit formation when a body of water was separated from the Baltic Sea in the 1950s. Through this separation the lake is separated from a fresh water supply and the salt content is falling steadily. The lack of water supply is currently causing the lake to silt up (as of 2013). The surroundings of the lake are flat and swampy.
The body of water is located in a nature reserve and is also part of the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park . The area of the lake and the surrounding area is an important resting and breeding area for water birds and home to rare plant species. There is therefore a strict route requirement . There is a hiking trail on the southern shore of the lake with two viewpoints on the lake shore.
