Project 206MR ( Russian проект 206МР ) is a class of missile speedboats that was developed in the Soviet Union under the code name "Wichr" ( Russian Вихрь ) during the Cold War . The boats constructed as hydrofoils were designated by NATO as the Matka class .
It is a further development of the Project 206 class, which also includes experience in the construction and operation of the Project 205 class. In contrast to the other hydrofoil boats of the Soviet Union, the main armament does not consist of torpedoes, but of missiles. According to the Russian classification, it is a "rocket hydrofoil" ( Russian Ракетный катер на подводных крыльях ).
The class was developed in the 1970s by the design office "Almas" ( Russian Центральное Морское Конструкторское Бюро (ЦМКБ) "Алмаз" ) in Leningrad. Eleven boats were built between 1977 and 1983 when construction was abandoned in favor of the Project 12411 class.
