The AK-176 (the abbreviation AK stands for Артиллерийский комплекс (Artillerijskij kompleks; German: artillery complex)) is a single-barreled naval gun of the caliber 76.2 mm. It was developed in the Soviet Union and is still in service with the Russian Navy today .
history
At the end of the 1960s, the Soviet navy's demand for a new fully automatic naval gun that could also be installed on small ships increased. It should be able to fight ships at a distance of 8 to 12 km, since the anti-ship missiles could not operate in this short range. In addition, the gun should be used against air and land targets. This led to the development of the AK-176.
development
Development of the gun began in 1969. A prototype named A-221 was tested for the first time from April to July of 1977. In early 1979, the gun was first installed on a Tarantul-class ship for test purposes . After the successful tests at the beginning of the year, the gun was officially included in the armament of the Soviet Navy in mid-1979 under the designation AK-176. The series production took place in a mechanical engineering plant in Gorki (today Nizhny Novgorod). The AK-176 was installed on almost all smaller Soviet-made vessels in the years that followed. Tests showed that the gun against low-flying cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles can be used. It succeeded several times in shooting down a replica of the Harpoon that had been developed for test purposes .
construction
AK-176
The AK-176 has a 76.2 mm barrel. It is a fully automatic multi-purpose gun designed for use on smaller ships such as corvettes or hydrofoils . The AK-176 can be used against sea targets, land targets and against aircraft, low-flying cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles. The cadence of the gun is adjustable. The options are 30, 60 or 120 to 130 rounds / min. The maximum ballistic range is 15,700 m. The pipe is sea water cooled.
Fire control is carried out by the fire control radar MR-123/175. The gun can be operated either fully automatically by the radar, semi-automatically (with the shooter supported by the radar) or manually (with the shooter himself having to aim optically).
AK-176M
The AK-176M works with the later developed fire control radar MR-123/176. This has a range of 45 km, in the event of interference by the enemy, the range should still be 30 km. In addition, the radar is supported by cameras and laser rangefinders. The gun itself remained unchanged.
