Hans Hofmann (Admiral)

Hans Hofmann (born July 10, 1933 in Hamburg ) is a former German naval officer . He was Vice Admiral in the People's Navy .

Life

The son of a worker completed an apprenticeship as a technical draftsman after finishing school and worked in the profession from 1948 to 1950. On October 15, 1950, he joined the German People's Police (VP) in the GDR as a candidate and student at the Parow Sea Police School . After two years of special training in the Soviet Union he served in the People's Police Lake from 1954 to 1956 as an officer of artillery in Sassnitz and then to 1957 at the naval base east, the later the first flotilla . After joining the SED in 1957, he completed a military attaché course between 1958 and 1960 . He then became chief of staff of the 2nd mine-laying and clearing department of the 4th flotilla . Between 1963 and 1966 he was an officer auditor at the military academy of the NVA " Friedrich Engels " in Dresden and graduated with a degree in political science and a diploma in military science. Later followed his doctorate to Dr. rer. mil. In 1966 he was first deputy chief and chief of staff of the 1st flotilla, before becoming the commander of the 1st flotilla in Peenemünde on Usedom on September 1, 1970 as a frigate captain . On November 4, 1970 he was promoted to captain at sea . On December 1, 1974, he was followed by Captain Werner Kotte as commander of the 1st Flotilla.

He himself became Deputy Chief and Chief of the Rear Services Command of the People's Navy . A few months after assuming this position, he was appointed Rear Admiral on March 1, 1975 by the chairman of the National Defense Council of the GDR , Erich Honecker . On March 1, 1986, he was promoted to Vice Admiral .

On January 1, 1990, he was appointed as the successor to Lieutenant General Manfred Graetz Deputy Minister for National Defense (MfNV) and Head of Reverse Services . On April 18, 1990, he became chief of security in the Ministry of Disarmament and Defense (MfAV) . After the end of the GDR, he was released on September 30, 1990.

For his services within the NVA he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in Silver and the Scharnhorst Order .
