A special equipment on ships for towing other ships is called towing gear . This equipment on tow vehicles depends on the preferred area of use. In the case of port and tug tugs, they are put on as radial towing gear with a lateral rope pull. The patent slip hook for the tow rope is attached to a swivel arm that can swivel out to port and starboard, thereby creating uniform force application points for each tow hook position. The swivel arm slides on an almost semicircular rail. The hawser is guided by one or more towbars.
In order to avoid jerky loads on the towing gear when the sea is rough, there are tow winches with sea state followers, also known as mooring winches , especially on deep-sea tugs .
