Ulrich Scharnow

Ulrich Scharnow (born October 4, 1926 in Küstrin ; † May 20, 1999 ) was a German captain , university professor for nautical science and author of specialist books.

Life

After attending general school, Scharnow went to the ship boys' school in Stettin at the age of 14. He then went to sea on various coastal ships and, in the course of the Second World War, on vehicles of the Reichsmarine. After the end of the war, Scharnow made his nautical patent A5 at the seafaring school Elsfleth. This was followed by around ten years as a helmsman in seafaring.

He then studied physical geography, climatology, cartography and education at the Potsdam University of Education and took part in internships at the Meteorological Observatory Potsdam and the Institute for Geomagnetism. Then Scharnow began as a teacher at the Wustrow Seafaring School . In addition to teaching, he was an officer with the A6 patent. In 1965 Scharnow was appointed Deputy Director of the Wustrow Seafaring School. He received his doctorate in 1967 and qualified as a professor in 1978. Scharnow was appointed prorector and lecturer at the newly founded Maritime Engineering College in Warnemünde-Wustrow. In 1991 he retired, but continued to work as a lecturer.

Scharnow was the author of numerous specialist books, he introduced an internationally recognized man-overboard maneuver with the Scharnow-Turn and developed an electronic nautical information system, which was produced under license by Krupp-Atlas in 1991 as ENCIS 1800 and in 1992 with Sea-Trade Award was awarded.

Scharnow was a member of the Nautical Comradeship Poseidon in Rostock, the Nautical Comradeship Visurgis in Elsfleth and an honorary member of the Association of Captains and Ship Officers in Rostock.

Scharnow was married to Renate Scharnow, née Kretzschmar (* 1928; † 2017) and died on May 20, 1999 in an accident.
