The station Puttgarden is a ferry terminal during the Vogelfluglinie on the island of Fehmarn . It is located between the town of the same name, Puttgarden and Marienuchte .

After the cessation of freight traffic and international long-distance traffic in December 2019, it only serves regional traffic on the Vogelfluglinie and is of regional importance for Fehmarn.

Operation and history

In 1961 a large ferry station was built in Puttgarden and put into operation in 1963 together with the Fehmarnsund Bridge , as the traditional ferry connection from Germany to Denmark between Rostock - Warnemünde and Gedser at that time was beyond the Iron Curtain and the provisional railway ferry Großenbrode - Gedser from Großenbrode station Kai after Gedser had too little capacity.

The ferry station was opened by the Danish King Frederik IX. and the then Federal President Heinrich Lübke . The station was of great importance from the start, as a large part of the rail-bound freight and passenger traffic was shipped to and from Scandinavia via Puttgarden. The extensive (freight) track systems that have been lying almost completely fallow since the end of freight traffic on the Vogelfluglinie still bear witness to this today.

A EuroCity is planned.

After the Great Belt crossing over the Great Belt in Denmark went into operation in 1997, the majority of trains took a detour for economic reasons in order to avoid the lengthy train separations due to the limited track capacity on the RoRo ships and the associated shunting work. This applies above all to goods traffic to the Puttgarden ferry station, which was initially partially discontinued and later completely. At the same time as freight traffic was discontinued, the ferry station was fundamentally modernized by the Scandlines shipping company between 1996 and 1998 .

In 2007 the station was completely modernized again; Among other things, ground-level access to the two platform tracks that are still in use was created with a glass, automatic exit door and a modern toilet facility with a disabled toilet. The temporary completion of the construction work was the new construction of the platform, on which the platform was significantly shortened, raised slightly and equipped with a modern lighting and loudspeaker system. The former access to all platforms via a covered bridge, which also served as pedestrian access to the ferries, has been blocked. The access bridge to ferry beds 1 and 2 was demolished and a new access bridge was built further west to ferry bed 1.

The previously locomotive-hauled EuroCity from Hamburg to Copenhagen were replaced in the 1990s by three-part Danish MF multiple units that can be separated and combined without the use of shunting locomotives. From December 2007 to December 2017, the IC3s were supplemented by pairs of ICE trains of the German class 605 (ICE-TD) , which served the route Copenhagen– Hamburg several times a day ; the run of a pair of trains was extended to Berlin until December 2016 .

In August 2010, the former train station in Burg auf Fehmarn was reactivated as a stopping point. This is called Fehmarn Castle . Since December 2010, the intercity route 31 to Frankfurt am Main has started and ended there and no longer calls at Puttgarden station.

Since the timetable change in December 2017, the Puttgarden ferry station has only been served by Danish IC3 trains and local transport. Various tracks were shut down in autumn 2018.

Since the timetable change in December 2019, the EuroCity trains have been diverted over the Fredericia – Flensburg railway line , the reason being preparatory construction work for the Fehmarnbelt tunnel on the Danish side. Thus ended after 56 years Trajektierung and long distance services in Puttgarden.

future

During the double-track expansion and electrification of the railway line between Lübeck and Puttgarden to connect the rails for the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link (FBQ), trains will not be able to travel between Puttgarden and Neustadt for five years from 2022. During this time, there should be high-quality replacement service every hour with double-decker buses between Puttgarden and Lübeck, which provide a train connection in Haffkrug . After that, the Puttgarden ferry station will be closed. It remains to be seen whether a stop in Puttgarden will remain after the opening of the FBQ .

Infrastructure

The station had a total of 22 kilometers of track and 145 points (1986: 126 points). Only two of the platform tracks are still accessible (as of 2018). Most of the trains run from platform 2.

Two other platforms, each with two platform tracks, are out of service.

The port adjoining the station area has four ferry basins, two of which have connections for shore leave passengers. The ferry beds 1 to 3 had a siding. Only basin 1, which is connected to tracks 2 and 3, was still used until 2019 to haul multiple units .

To the south and east of the passenger station there used to be extensive sidings and the Puttgarden depot .

The German Alps – Baltic Sea holiday route ends in Puttgarden after 1,738 kilometers . The ferry connection leads to Rødby on the Danish island of Lolland , the ferry station there is Rødby Færge Station .

Despite the bridge over the Great Belt, Puttgarden, with the Scandlines ferries, is still important as an important “Germany’s gateway to Scandinavia ”.
