action

The protagonist, the truck passenger Hannes, lives alone and withdrawn in Dortmund . His great passion is the railroad and the study of course books . For this reason he wants to take part in the 1st International Timetable Competition in the northern Finnish town of Inari . When his new boss refuses to grant him a vacation and quits him, he knocks him down. Hannes hastily sets off for Finland. Meanwhile, his boss is found dead in his office. His safe was robbed. The police then suspect Hannes of the murder and Chief Inspector Franck from the Dortmund criminal police pursues him as far as Finland. But Hannes succeeds several times, albeit often by chance, in escaping his pursuers.

On his trip, he meets the charismatic Finn Sirpa, who is disappointed in their current relationship, and falls in love with her. Arrived in Inari, the inspector and Hannes meet for the first time. However, Hannes can persuade him to let him take part in the competition. There he reached the final. In the last competition he replied, lying in the lead, with a route that Sirpa recommended to him as a more beautiful route - knowing that this route takes significantly longer (“The most beautiful way to Inari is via northern Sweden, via Haparanda ”). His competitor wins by a narrow margin. However, Sirpa rates this as a token of his affection.

Chief Inspector Franck receives a call from Germany during the competition, informing them of the arrest of the chief secretary. The latter had killed her boss after Hannes had knocked him down and stole the money. Therefore Franck says goodbye to Hannes and leaves him with Sirpa in Inari.
