Puttgarden depot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Puttgarden depot was the youngest depot of the Hamburg Federal Railway Directorate and also the one with the shortest existence.

With the opening of the Vogelfluglinie from Lübeck via Fehmarn to Denmark in 1963, the history of the Puttgarden depot began on May 1, 1963.

The first locomotives of the new depot were those of the Heiligenhafen depot , which was closed on April 30, 1963. In addition, three locomotives of the class V 65 , the later class 265, came from the Hamburg-Altona depot, a stock that was increased to five locomotives of this class (V 65 001–004, 006). The locomotives were only used in the shunting service at the Puttgarden ferry station . Sometimes a class V 60 locomotive was also at home here. At the end of 1967, Puttgarden was history again as a home base. After the V 65 004 and 006 had already been returned to the Hamburg-Altona depot, the other three machines came to the Lübeck depot . However, nothing changed in the use of the locomotives. Some time later, the V 60 from the Lübeck depot, now known as the 260 series, completely took over the shunting service in the ferry port. Until the end of 1981 the depot was run as an operations and personnel depot, from 1982 as a depot of the Lübeck depot. The ferry ships of the Deutsche Bundesbahn used on the Fehmarnbelt were also based at the Puttgarden depot.

The Puttgarden depot was never intended for the maintenance of steam locomotives . The turntable or coal bunker were never built. If steam locomotives got lost here, they had to turn around on a track triangle on the island near Burg / Fehmarn .

A double-track locomotive and wagon hall existed for handling the diesel locomotives. A tank system and a washing system were also available.

After the electrification of the railway lines between Hamburg and Flensburg in the 1990s, international rail freight transport to Denmark was completely relocated to the Hamburg – Neumünster – Flensburg railway line and discontinued on the Vogelfluglinie. Passenger train traffic experienced changes with the discontinuation of the Interregio trains and with the changeover from locomotive-hauled wagon trains to Danish IC3 multiple units and German ICE-TD . Due to the reduced volume of traffic, some of the tracks have been removed or closed. The Puttgarden branch office was closed. The buildings are still there.
