Chronicle of route electrification in Germany since 1994
Chronological list of the electrification of railway lines in the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany since the foundation of the Deutsche Bahn AG on January 1st, 1994.
Summary
After the establishment of DB AG, (re) electrification dominated the German unity transport projects . Now that most of these have been completed, existing lines will mainly be electrified in order to integrate them into S-Bahn networks. In addition, electrification is taking place as part of the construction of new high-speed lines . In individual cases, short connecting routes are also electrified to facilitate operational simplicity. Main lines have only been re-electrified in individual cases. Schleswig-Holstein in particular benefited from these electrifications. The railway lines from Hamburg to the three largest cities in the state, Kiel (1995), Flensburg (1996) and Lübeck (2008), were only electrified by DB AG.
At the end of 2019, 20,345 of 33,291 km of operating length (61%) in the Deutsche Bahn network were electrified. The degree of electrification increased as the length of the operating route decreased; In 1995 it was 45 percent (17,998 of 40,033 km), in 2010 it was 59 percent (19,715 of 33,417 km). The federal government is aiming for a level of electrification of 70 percent (as of 2019). More was newly electrified than this absolute increase, as some electrified lines were also shut down during this period. See the list of formerly electrified railway lines .
