The station Kaarster Lake is one of five rail Keep in Kaarst and stop on the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn . It is located on the Neuss – Viersen railway line and is the western terminus of the S28. It is named after Lake Kaarster .

history

The station was opened in 1999 on the Neuss – Viersen railway line to open up the western area of Kaarst. Since then it has served as the start / end point of the S28, which was newly created in the same year. It is also the western beginning of the operational part of the railway line and, with its opening, represents the eastern reactivation of the railway line. Deutsche Bahn wanted to shut down the railway line in the 1990s and then sold it to Regiobahn GmbH , who were on their own initiative restored the railway line including the railway line to a modern state.

Location and structure

The train station is located approx. 900 m east of the Kaarst lake and at the westernmost point of the populated Kaarst urban area. The Kaarster See parking lot for hikers is 1000 m from the S-Bahn stop, the Kaarster See sports center, which is not located directly on the shore, is 750 m from the S-Bahn station. The station consists of the Regiobahn platform, a bus-train link and a P + R parking lot as well as parking spaces for bicycles. Access to the platform is via ramps and is therefore barrier-free.

The railway line is double-tracked in the area of the station, but to the east of the station the railway line is single-track. The western area of the station consists of butt-turning tracks, in which the S28 takes a break and signs in the direction of Mettmann.

service

Today the station is the western starting point of the Regiobahn line S28. It runs every 20 minutes (Saturday and Sunday every 30 minutes) from Kaarster See to Mettmann-Stadtwald via Neuss and Düsseldorf . In addition to the starting point for the S-Bahn, it is also the starting point for two regional bus routes from neighboring Willich , as well as a regional bus route to Kaarst, Neuss- Neusserfurth and Düsseldorf-Oberkassel .

Planned reactivation as S-Bahn to Viersen and Venlo

When the S28 began operating, the intention was to reactivate the section east of the station, which has largely been closed and partially dismantled. Originally the S28 was supposed to be extended to Mönchengladbach , but this was rejected. It is planned to operate the rail connection again to Viersen and to run the S28 to Venlo . The connection between Viersen train station and Kaarster See was taken over by the SB86 line until 2003, now the 094 bus line, which, like the old railway line,  serves the Viersen  - Neersen  - Schiefbahn - Kaarster See route.
