The Kaarster See is a quarry pond created by gravel mining near Kaarst east of Mönchengladbach . It consists of a large and a small lake.

Both lakes are separated from each other by a dam , which is cut through by a short connecting channel, so that both water surfaces are connected to one another. The lake extends south of the immediately adjacent A 52 for more than a kilometer, mainly in a west-east direction and, together with a group of around 20 smaller and larger lakes near the city of Kaarst, forms the Kaarst Lake District . About 1 km east of the Kaarster See is the Kaarster See train station as the western end point of the Neuss – Kaarst line . It is used by the S 28 in the direction of Düsseldorf and is owned by Regiobahn GmbH . The railway line between Kaarst and Viersen has been closed, but its historic route runs in the southern vicinity of the Kaarst Lake District.

The large lake measures a good 18 hectares at a depth of up to 19 meters and serves four local sports clubs for fishing , sailing , surfing and diving .

The small lake has been a bathing lake around five hectares in size and a maximum of six meters deep since 1984 . Like the big lake, it is traversed by groundwater and meets the requirements of the bathing water directive of the European Union .

The lakes together with the surrounding nearly 16 hectares of land, a roughly 4 square kilometers large recreation area , which the conservation subject. It offers bathers on the small lake a good hectare of gravel and sand beach , almost two hectares of lawn for sunbathing and two hectares of bushes and plants. Two kilometers of walking paths lead around the large lake. In addition to water birds, crabs, snails and mussels, 14 species of fish can be found in Lake Kaarst. You can find pike, pikeperch, perch, ruff, eel, catfish, roach, rudd, bream, tench, carp and chub.

The Kaarster See has been managed by the Kaarst sport fishing club since 1938.

The local recreation area Kaarster See has been operated since 1992 by the " Kreiswerke Grevenbroich" of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss .
