Regiobahn railcar in Mettmann

The Regiobahn GmbH (official name: Regional railway company Kaarst-Neuss-Dusseldorf-Mettmann Erkrath-Wuppertal mbH ) is a railway infrastructure company of the cities Dusseldorf , Kaarst and Wuppertal and the circles Neuss and Mettmann . The Regiobahn Fahrbetriebsgesellschaft mbH is the railway company associated with it .

The Regiobahn is a member of the Rhein-Ruhr transport association . It owns two railway lines in North Rhine-Westphalia : Ikea Kaarst – Kaarster See and Erkrath Nord – Dornap-Hahnenfurth . She also owns Talent- type diesel railcars .

history

The company was founded on August 8, 1992 by the participating cities and districts. On January 1, 1998, the Regiobahn took over the railway lines from Neuss to Kaarst and from Düsseldorf-Gerresheim via Mettmann to Dornap-Hahnenfurth from Deutsche Bahn AG .

From September 24, 1998, the renovation work was carried out on the western branch of the route operated by the Regiobahn, after the cessation of passenger traffic, which had been carried out by Deutsche Bahn until then, on January 2, 1999 also on the eastern branch. The foundation stone for the new service station in Mettmann was laid on March 13, 1999, and the inauguration followed in September 1999.

On September 26, 1999, operations on the route between Mettmann and Kaarst started at hourly intervals and, from May 28, 2000, switched to a 20-minute cycle.

stretch

The two routes belonging to Regiobahn GmbH have a total length of almost 22 kilometers. Of this, the S 28 line is operated for 18 kilometers, a section with a further 3.7 kilometers from Mettmann in the direction of Wuppertal to the Dornap-Hahnenfurth train station is currently only used by freight traffic.

Eastern extension to Wuppertal main station

Construction site extension after the Dornap branch (April 2019)

For the timetable change in December 2020, the start of passenger traffic beyond the eastern end point of Mettmann Stadtwald is planned. A subsequent double-track route and the single-track tapered Hahnenfurth - Düssel stop with park-and-ride facility and a branch on the Wuppertal-Vohwinkel-Essen-Überruhr railway line were built for this purpose. The S 28 is to reach Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof via the extended route and then via the route of the S-Bahn line S 9 as the new end point . The originally planned, simultaneous electrification of the Regiobahn lines has not yet taken place. This means that the new multiple units ordered by the Rhein-Ruhr transport association cannot be used.

For this extension it was decided in the summer of 2005 to re-route and in 2009 there was a building permit , but due to the poor financial situation of the owner communes, construction work could not begin. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia assumed the majority of the costs.

In December 2013, the Ministry of Building, Housing, Urban Development and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia approved the submitted application for a permit to extend the S 28 from Mettmann Stadtwald to Wuppertal Hbf . Construction started at the beginning of 2014. Operations were originally supposed to start after the construction project was completed in December 2016. Due to construction delays, operations are not expected to start before the end of 2020.

Further planning

West extension

An extension of the route in a westerly direction was also examined. Initially a route was planned from Kaarst via Willich - Schiefbahn and - Neersen to Viersen . In order to receive EU funding for cross-border traffic, the extension to Venlo in the Netherlands would have been necessary. The standardized evaluation of this variant in 2010 resulted in a benefit-cost factor of 2.14. In the 2010s, the extension to Viersen was still discussed, but it came under certain circumstances. a. because of the resistance of the city of Mönchengladbach, over whose urban area the route runs almost 2.5 kilometers, also in this decade. A standardized assessment carried out in 2015 showed a benefit-cost ratio of 1.25 for operation with diesel vehicles and 1.22 for operation with electric vehicles for the extension to Viersen.

The route of the S 28 from Neuss Hbf follows the Neuss – Viersen railway line , which partially runs parallel to the north canal and on which there was only train service from 1968 to Kaarst. Extending west to Viersen would completely reactivate this line.

Circle Line

In 2005 there were considerations for a circle line , including the disused Niederbergbahn and a newly built Rhine crossing. The Ringbahn was supposed to connect the Lower Berg cities of Wülfrath, Velbert , Heiligenhaus and Ratingen as well as the Düsseldorf airport . The ring should be closed in Neuss. Due to the dismantling of the tracks and the conversion of the Niederbergbahn railway line to the Niederbergbahn Panorama Cycle Path, implementation in the medium term is no longer up for discussion, but the cycle path was deliberately designed with the ulterior motive of securing the route for possible reactivation.

electrification

The Regiobahn has been planning to electrify its two lines since 2014. Initially, the construction of the systems is to take place as part of the new construction of the line to Wuppertal, but this may delay their commissioning. In 2015, the Regiobahn had already tendered the procurement of three electric multiple units (new or used) for delivery in mid-2017. The VRR ordered a total of ten three-part Stadler Flirt 3XL for use on the S 28 line. The delivery of the first four trains should take place in December 2019. Since the electrification of the Mettmann to Wuppertal-Dornap line can only be completed much later, the four trains will initially be used on other lines in the VRR. In the summer of 2020 it was announced that electrification would be dispensed with for up to six years and that the vehicles ordered by the Regiobahn would be taken over by the VRR in its fleet for the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr.

business

S 28 of the Kaarst – Mettmann Regiobahn

The S 28 line of the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn runs a total of 34 kilometers from Mettmann via Erkrath , Düsseldorf and Neuss to Kaarst, with a 16-kilometer section of the DB Netz between Düsseldorf-Gerresheim and Neuss Hbf .

The operational management of the S 28 is the responsibility of the Rheinisch-Bergische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , a subsidiary of Transdev GmbH . In November 2010, the VRR announced in the Tenders Electronic Daily that it would let the Regiobahn continue to operate the route for a further 10 years from December 2011 by means of an in-house award , which had previously delegated the operation. In March 2011, however, this intended direct award was converted into a tender over a period of ten years. The Regiobahn, which is already in service, was the winner of the tender. On July 19, 2017, the VRR announced that the transport services in the follow-up contract from 2021 to 2036 would again be provided by the Regiobahn.

vehicles

Talent railcars are used on the S 28 . The railcar , equipped with two diesel engines , reaches a top speed of 100 km / h and takes around 51 minutes for the 18-stop route.

The originally eight railcars of this type were increased by four more vehicles in 2003, as the number of passengers during rush hour exceeded expectations so significantly that occasionally passengers could not join them due to lack of space. In view of the further increase in passenger numbers, an increase of at least two more vehicles would be necessary. However, this has so far failed due to the lack of financing.

During a closure of the main line through Wuppertal in 2017, combined train and bus replacement services were offered via Mettmann Stadtwald, for this purpose some former vehicles of the AKN Eisenbahn , now owned by BayernBahn , were loaned and used as express trains between Düsseldorf Hbf and Mettmann Stadtwald.

In view of the postponement of the electrification of its routes, the Regiobahn plans to take over additional Integral diesel multiple units from the Bayerische Oberlandbahn for the timetable change in December 2020.
