The association Bavarian Railway Museum e. V. (BEM) had in 1985, in order to be able to carry out a museum railroad traffic on the railway lines starting from Nördlingen , with the German Federal Railroad finally conducted several years of negotiations to find a way to be able to travel the routes around Nördlingen with steam locomotives . In December 1987 this led to the establishment of a private limited company , the Museumsbahnen im Donau-Ries Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (MDR).

In several stages, MDR initially took on hourly and later permanent operator responsibility for the railway infrastructure on the Nördlingen - Dinkelsbühl - Feuchtwangen - Dombühl and Nördlingen - Gunzenhausen routes .

The MDR was responsible for enabling historic train traffic on the temporarily leased lines. With the liberalization of the railway market on January 1, 1994, the company quickly developed into one of the first "young" private railway and infrastructure companies in Bavaria. After the field of activity was no longer limited to historical traffic in Nördlinger Ries , the EVU was renamed BayernBahn GmbH in February 2000 . BayernBahn Infra GmbH was founded on May 23, 2016 to outsource the railway infrastructure; BayernWaggon GmbH has existed since 2007 .

The railway line - Landshut - Neuhausen has also been in operation since 2011. On December 31, 2018, BayernBahn GmbH relinquished responsibility for the route to Dombühl.
