history
Solingen light rail
The meter-gauge Solingen Stadtbahn was founded on December 30, 1896 by the Union-Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft (UEG) from Berlin . She got a time-unlimited concession to build and operate a tram in Solingen. The first line from Stöckerberg via Schlagbaum, Mühlenplätze and the Kölner Straße to the Südbahnhof was put into operation on June 2, 1897 and was three kilometers long. It was followed on the same day by the route from Neumarkt via Kaiserstraße, Schützenstraße and Burger Straße to Krahenhöhe with a length of 2.4 kilometers. Finally, on April 2, 1898, the line from the Südbahnhof via Grünewalder Straße to Höhscheid was opened with a length of two kilometers. The third route, however, had no connection to the first, as the KPEV did not allow the route to be crossed. This meant that passengers had to cross the railway tracks on foot.
On January 1, 1903, the railway was taken over by the Solinger Kleinbahn AG . This company, founded on February 13, 1900, was owned by the UEG and the Society for Electrical Enterprises . After the new main station in Solingen was inaugurated on October 19, 1910, the sections of the route that were previously separated at the southern station could be combined and used continuously.
On August 16, 1913, the railway changed hands again. From now on it belonged to RWE , which had undertaken to build a number of new lines in and around Solingen. On August 4, 1914, a connection to the Barmer Bergbahn was made at Mühlenplätze .
During the shortage of personnel caused by the First World War , operations could no longer be carried out smoothly, so that the route was closed. It was not until 1919 that normal operations could be resumed.
On December 20 of this year, the city also terminated its contract with RWE. Since the routes were run down, the city took over the operation itself from then on. On April 1, 1922, the Krahenhöhe - Burg line was taken over by the Wermelskirchen-Burger Railway . On December 2, 1926, the route from Brühler Strasse to Widdert , which had already been planned by RWE, was put into operation.
Solingen circular path
On February 6th and 8th, 1898, the UEG signed a contract for the construction of a meter-gauge tram with the municipalities of Gräfrath, Solingen, Ohligs, Vohwinkel and Wald parallel to the Stadtbahn.
On November 19, 1898, the lines from Solingen via Merscheid to Ohligs and from Schlagbaum to Wald were put into operation. Two months later, on January 13, 1899, the sections from Ohligs to Wald and from Solingen via Gräfrath to Vohwinkel followed .
The UEG founded the Solinger Kreisbahn AG on February 13, 1900 , which officially took over the routes on January 1, 1902. The circular path itself did not undertake any further route extensions. But they took over the routes of the 1905 streetcar Elberfeld Cronenberg Remscheid and leased from 12 July 1908, the route Municipal Theater - Easter tree of the tram in the city of Elberfeld . The Elberfeld-Cronenberg-Remscheid tram line was sold on to the Barmer Bergbahn on January 1, 1910.
On August 16, 1913, the railway and the Stadtbahn were transferred to RWE. The regular lane expansion planned by RWE did not take place due to differences in the specific route and the outbreak of the First World War. The expansion that has already started is still visible today on the basis of the Frankfurter Damm, which corresponds to the course of the section that was already built at the time.
The First World War also led to the closure of operations here. Only after the border police had taken up posts at the Kluse and Kohlfurther Bridge could operations, which had been suspended on December 16, 1918, be resumed.
On January 1, 1920, after the chairman of the RWE supervisory board Hugo Stinnes had given up his resistance , the railway became the property of the municipalities of the Solingen district.
Solingen municipal utilities
After the incorporation of Gräfrath, Ohligs and Wald to Solingen became apparent, on August 1, 1929 the operations of the Stadtbahn and Kreisbahn were merged to form the Solingen municipal trams . The railway served a total of five lines in 1929.
On January 25, 1931, a tunnel was put into operation in the inner city area under the freight yard. On April 29, 1932, the city of Wuppertal, in which the municipality of Vohwinkel was absorbed, subsequently approved the dissolution of the circular path. Thus, the Städtische Straßenbahnen Solingen GmbH was only entered in the commercial register at this point in time . By order of the management, however, the GmbH became an independent operation of the city of Solingen on November 30, 1933 . After some modifications to the line network, its length at the end of 1936 was approximately 38.7 kilometers.
At the beginning of the Second World War , the route between Schlagbaum and Stöckerberg was closed. On September 9th, the war timetable came into force, which only provided for trips for rush hour traffic. By order of the Minister of the Interior , the track system on the Wupperbrücke in Burg was also put back into operation, because a connection between Wuppertal and Solingen was considered to be important to the war effort. In 1943, parts of the Remscheid network were damaged in a bomb attack, so that the connection between the castle and Remscheid hospital of the Remscheid municipal utilities had to be taken over by the railways from Solingen between August 11 and October 3 . Large parts of Solingen's old town were destroyed in one air raid on November 4th and 5th, 1944. The tram fleet was almost completely destroyed by the attack. On February 16, 1945, operations were stopped because of the approaching front. On April 17th the city was occupied by the Americans.
The rough reconstruction was completed on December 16, 1946 and the pre-war network was back in operation. In addition to passenger transport, goods transport was also added in the post-war years. For example, the Bochum municipal utilities transported coal to Solingen.
At the beginning of the 1950s, tram operations began to slowly cease in favor of the installation of a trolleybus service . On June 12, 1952 the first and on November 16, 1959 at 10:00 a.m. the last tram line of the Stadtwerke in Solingen was closed. The last trip of a tram in Solingen took place on May 3, 1969, when the Stadtwerke Wuppertal carried out the last trip on the route from Cronenberg to Solingen.
The first trolleybus route between the central bus station, Graf-Wilhelm-Platz , and Ohligser Bahnhof went into operation on June 19, 1952. The more detailed history of the trolleybus operation in Solingen is detailed under Trolleybus Solingen . The installation of the network to the neighboring town of Burg was completed by the end of the 1950s. Smaller network expansions took place at the beginning of the 1980s. The last major expansion took place in 1993 with the connection of the Aufderhöhe district to the trolleybus. In the absence of a suitable vehicle type, the municipal utilities even built their own model, the so-called Trolleybus Solingen , in the late 1960s .
In the 1990s, taking into account the zeitgeist of privatization , the municipal utility was converted from a municipal company into a GmbH . In 2002, around half of the Stadtwerke were sold to MVV Energie , but the city remained the majority owner of the company. After various disagreements with the partner company MVV, the Stadtwerke were finally bought back on October 1, 2012 and have since been completely in the hands of the city again.
At SWS, a generation of diesel buses has been in operation for significantly longer than other transport companies, e.g. B. the model Mercedes-Benz O305 from 1972 to 2001, since the main focus is on the trolleybuses. Car 168 of type Mercedes-Benz O305 was the longest-running diesel bus of the SWS. It was in use for over 25 years before it was only retired in 2001.
Between 1996 and 1998 numerous low-floor buses were bought in a "BergischerBus" purchasing cooperation in which SWS, WSW mobil GmbH, Stadtwerke Remscheid and Hagener Straßenbahn were involved. These buses were special, because all vehicles from this order wore the same color: the Bergische StadtLinie design (blue and light gray).
The fourth generation of trolleybuses currently features 50 articulated trolleybuses ( Berkhof , Van Hool , Hess ), as well as 47 solo diesel buses (all Mercedes-Benz ) and 17 articulated diesel buses (Mercedes-Benz).

Battery trolleybuses
A so-called battery trolleybus (BOB) has been tested in Solingen since January 2018 . In the medium term, it is planned to replace the existing trolleybuses with auxiliary diesel drives with BOB. There are currently four BOBs in operation (June 2018), there is an order option for a further 16 BOBs. The range in battery operation is around 20 kilometers. SWS, the Polish manufacturer Solaris and the Düsseldorf company Kiepe Electric are jointly producing the vehicles. Testing will take place on lines 681, 682 and 683. Regular operation is planned for line 695 from autumn 2018. The federal government is funding the project with 15 million euros , the price for a BOB is 900,000 euros. The charging time at the charging station is one hour, but it can also be charged via the overhead line. If the performance of the batteries has dropped too much, they are installed as power storage in substations. The maiden voyage with guests took place on June 16, 2018.
