Location of the Widdert district in Solingen

Widdert is a district of the city of Solingen in the Bergisches Land . It is located in the Burg / Höhscheid district .

geography

The district of Widdert is located south of Höhscheid on the hills above the Wupper River , which forms the city limits to Leichlingen . The area drops steeply to the banks of the Wupper and the Rüden and Friedrichstal courts located there. In contrast, the terrain increases rather moderately to the north in the direction of Höhscheid.

Widdert is located away from the main thoroughfares and, surrounding the sparsely populated residential areas, has a predominantly agricultural use. The district itself is relatively small and consists of only a few streets, some of which are steeply sloping.

etymology

In the name of the district, as in many other place names in the Bergisches Land, the originally forested surroundings play a major role. The ending of the place first named as Widerode can point to the initial clearing of the area.

history

Widdert was first mentioned as Widerode in 1218. The place could be characterized as a court for centuries : a small settlement with a few houses. It probably had its core on today's Widdert street, southwest of the church . The oldest half-timbered houses in town can be found there .

In the Middle Ages and the modern era was Honschaft Widdert a Honschaft in the parish and the judicial district of Solingen.

In 1929, Widdert was incorporated into the new city of Solingen as a district of the city of Höhscheid with the city district of Solingen and the cities of Gräfrath , Wald and Ohligs .

In the post-war period , Widdert, with its various dance halls and restaurants, became a popular meeting place across the region. After those boom times in the 1950s and 1960s, many of these facilities closed.

Loos'n Maschinn

Loos'n Maschinn

The former steam grinding shop Loos'n Maschinn, now operated as an industrial museum, is located in the Widdert district . In the building originally intended for demolition, the everyday work of the Solingen grinders in the period of industrialization is discussed. The brick building , dating from 1888, is located on Börsenstrasse and has been a registered monument since August 8, 1989 . The museum is operated in close cooperation with the LVR-Industriemuseum Solingen , which is located in the Solingen district of Merscheid .
