The Neanderthal station is a former station , today only a stop of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr in the municipality of Mettmann in North Rhine-Westphalia .
history
On September 15, 1879, the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft opened the last section from the Mettmann train station (today Mettmann Stadtwald) of its Düsseldorf-Derendorf-Dortmund Süd railway line , which is also known regionally as the Wuppertal Northern Railway .
Together with this, the Neanderthal train station was put into operation and the reception building was inaugurated. This is still preserved today, but is no longer used in its original function. In the 1980s, the entire area and the station building were bought by the landscape gardener Richard Bödeker and converted into a residential building. The history of the railway was included in the design of the gardens and parks around the station and the area is filled with artifacts from the history of the railway along the old "northern railway" route as well as hundreds of types of bamboo, elaborately planned walls and floor coverings.
The station was meanwhile of local importance, in addition to the two main tracks (tracks 1 and 2) with one platform each , it had an alternate and passing track (track 3), three shunting and stabling tracks (tracks 4 to 6), and a siding for goods trains at the nearby Mannesmann - lime works .
Most recently, the route was only used by railcars and local freight trains. On January 2, 1999, Deutsche Bahn ceased passenger traffic after it had sold the route and with it Neanderthal station a year earlier to the Kaarst-Neuss-Düsseldorf-Erkrath-Mettmann-Wuppertal mbH (short Regiobahn GmbH ) had sold.
Todays situation
After the route was taken over by the Regiobahn, it was upgraded for S-Bahn operations, and all stops were subjected to extensive renovation and modernization measures.
The previous Neanderthal station was dismantled to a stopping point and all tracks except for main tracks 1 and 2 were dismantled. The house platform , where the trains to Mettmann stopped until then, was torn down. Since then, these trains have stopped at the island platform between tracks 1 and 2. Since this platform is relatively narrow, a new platform was built for trains going to Düsseldorf at the location of the former overtaking track 3, which can be accessed directly from the bus station .
Since 26 September 1999, operates Rheinisch-Bergische Railway Company line S 28 of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn - initially every hour, from 28 May 2000, 20-minute intervals - from Kaarster See on Neuss Hauptbahnhof , Düsseldorf main station and Neanderthal to Mettmann Stadtwald ; an extension to the Wuppertal-Vohwinkel train station is planned.
