Helmut Hadwiger (born April 17, 1922 in Villach ; † October 22, 2004 there ) was an Austrian ski jumper . He jumped for SV Villach .

Career

Between 1937 and 1940 he was Austria's best youth jumper. Tied on points with the first, he was second in the 1939 all-German youth championship. He was later drafted into the Wehrmacht and seriously injured. From a broken thigh shot, he was left with a stiffened leg that was 5 cm shorter. He trained hard to make his stiff leg flexible again and fought his way back to the top of Austria.

Helmut Hadwiger qualified in Seefeld for the 1948 Olympic Games in St. Moritz where he reached 35th place on the normal hill. Another three Olympic participations were to follow: 1960 in Squaw Valley as Nordic team captain and at the two games in 1964 and 1976 in Innsbruck as FIS referee.

His hill record of 77.5 m on the old Möltschacher Schanze from 1949 in front of over 3,000 spectators was only broken in the 1990s.

After his active career, he remained involved in skiing as a referee , from 1957 to 1982 as an international FIS jumping judge. For his diverse activities he became an honorary member of the Carinthia State Ski Association and the ÖSV .
