Athlone , formerly also known as West London , is a suburb of Cape Town , South Africa . The center of Athlone is nine kilometers southeast of the city center of Cape Town, so the suburb is part of the city's closed settlement area. Athlone is one of the Cape Flats and is administered by the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality .
The township used to belong to the non-white areas of Cape Town and became known for several anti-apartheid riots. Even if the spatial racial segregation in Athlone remains virtually unchanged, the place is today considered a well-kept residential area for the colored middle class.
Two cooling towers were once considered the landmarks of the suburb, they shaped the sight of the city on the way to and from the airport. They were blown up on August 22, 2010.

According to the census carried out on October 9, 2011, Athlone is a place ( main place ) with 237,414 inhabitants who live in 51,891 households. The average household size is thus 4.6 people. 52.2% of the population are female and 47.8% male.
Athlone Colored (live mainly Coloreds ), which account for 87.0% of the population. Furthermore, 5.9% are black, 4.5% Indian or Asian, 0.3% white and 2.3% other. 52.0% of those surveyed stated Afrikaans as their first language , 43.6% English , 1.9% isiXhosa and 2.5% another language.

Athlone SP ( SP stands for sub place ) is the district that gives the place its name. Most of the colloquial language Athlone only refers to the district and not the whole place. Athlone SP has 8,900 residents. With an area of 1.50 km², this corresponds to a population density of 5,929 inhabitants per km². The population consists of 82.8% colored , 8.5% black , 4.1% Indians or Asians , 1.1% white and 3.5% others. 81.6% of the population speak English , 11.7% Afrikaans and 6.7% other languages.
Bonteheuwel is the second largest district of Athlone with 46,000 inhabitants. With an area of 3.55 km², the population density is 12,955 inhabitants per km². The population consists of 95.3% colored, 3.1% black, 0.4% Indians or Asians, 0.1% white and 1.1% others. 67.0% of the population speak Afrikaans, 31.4% English and 1.6% other languages.
Bridgetown has a good 12,000 inhabitants. With an area of 2.20 km², the population density is 5,517 inhabitants per km². The population consists of 92.9% colored, 4.6% black, 1.4% Indians or Asians, 0.2% white and 0.8% others. 72.4% of the population speak English, 24.2% Afrikaans and 3.4% other languages.
Hanover Park is the third largest district with just under 35,000 inhabitants. With an area of 2.09 km², the population density is 16,554 inhabitants per km². The population consists of 96.5% coloreds, 2.4% blacks, 0.4% Indians or Asians, 0.1% whites and 0.6% others. 70.7% of the population speak Afrikaans, 27.9% English and 1.4% other languages.
Heideveld has a good 17,000 inhabitants. With an area of 1.82 km², the population density is 9,557 inhabitants per km². The population consists of 92.3% colored, 5.3% black, 0.8% Indians or Asians, 0.1% white and 1.4% others. 63.1% of the population speak Afrikaans, 34.4% English, 1.2% isiXhosa and 1.3% other languages.
With 53,000 inhabitants, Manenberg is the largest district of Athlone. With an area of 3.35 km², the population density is 15,797 inhabitants per km². The population consists of 84.3% colored, 11.7% black, 0.5% Indians or Asians, 0.1% white and 3.4% others. 71.8% of the population speak Afrikaans, 17.8% English, 6.8% isiXhosa and 3.6% other languages.
