Swell:

The Stahringen – Friedrichshafen railway is a single-track , non-electrified railway line in Baden-Württemberg that runs from Stahringen to Friedrichshafen . The 51.780 kilometers long main line runs mainly along the northern shore of Lake Constance and is part of the route book route 731 from Radolfzell to Friedrichshafen Stadt . This is called the Bodenseegürtelbahn by Deutsche Bahn AG, which operates the route .

history

The once cross-border line was created to close the gap between the network of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways and that of the Royal Württemberg State Railways . After Stahringen was connected to the railway network on July 20, 1867 by the Radolfzell – Mengen railway line, the first section of the Lake Constance belt railway from Stahringen to Überlingen did not go into operation until August 18, 1895. On October 2, 1901, the Friedrichshafen city station was finally reached. Friedrichshafen had already been accessible from Ulm with the southern railway since 1847 .

On December 22nd, 1939, there was a major train accident on the line when a passenger and freight train collided between Markdorf and Kluftern, killing 102 people. As two express trains collided earlier on the same day in Genthin - with 186 dead, this December 22nd is considered the worst day in German railway history.

business

The Stahringen – Friedrichshafen railway line is now only operated by local rail passenger transport, although the Seehänsele local transport line has been running hourly with Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 railcars since 2003 . Since September 2019 the trains will SWEG the series 622 used. Some trains on the edge of the day go to Singen and Lindau . In addition, the Interregio-Express Sprinter Ulm – Basel Bad runs every two hours , which only stops in Überlingen en route and is operated with tilting technology trains of the 612 series .

Planned electrification

The state of Baden-Württemberg has unsuccessfully registered the electrification of the line for the 2030 Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan as part of the Basel – Schaffhausen – Singen – Friedrichshafen line. Instead, it may be electrified by 2025 through an electrification program planned by the state of Baden-Württemberg in 2018. Planning work has been ongoing since 2019 for the expansion and electrification of the Stahringen – Friedrichshafen railway line, including the line to the west to Radolfzell . The preliminary planning should be completed by the end of 2020. The costs of the preliminary planning amount to 3.8 million euros, of which the state of Baden-Württemberg will assume a quarter.
