Districts

Bermatingen

In the 5th to 7th century the site was settled by free Alemannic farmers. In 779, Permodingas (Bermatingen) was first mentioned in a deed of gift from Ato and his wife Herosta to the St. Gallen monastery . In 1390, the Ittendorf taverns sold their part of Bermatingen to the Salem Imperial Abbey . From 1424 to 1802 there was a monastery in Bermatingen itself, the Weppach Monastery.

During the Peasants' War in 1525, the so-called sea heap gathered under Eitelhans Ziegelmüller in Bermatingen. The lake pile consisted of 8,000 farmers and gathered in the square in front of the village next to the rectory. The headquarters for the captains was in the Kehlhof. From there, the peasants and servants undertook attacks on cities, castles and monasteries in April 1525, some of which brought them under their control. The locations were Markdorf, Salem Monastery, Ittendorf Castle and Meersburg. On April 14, 1525 they moved to Weingarten. There, however, no decisive battle took place, instead the strategist Ziegelmüller concluded with the head sesson Georg III. von Waldburg (Bauernjörg) signed the Treaty of Weingarten and ended the revolution. This was the only bloodless clash between the peasant army and the army of the Swabian League .

The village burned down in 1590 due to a lightning strike. In 1790 there was a devastating flood after severe storms. With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , Bermatingen came to Baden in 1803 . In 1857 the community came to the Überlingen district office, and in 1973 to the Lake Constance district. Bermatingen and Ahausen merged to form a community.

Ahausen

Ahausen was first mentioned in a document in 752. The deed of gift of May 10, 752 to the St. Gallen Monastery names the farm in Hahahusir (today Ahausen). Ahausen came to the Freiweltliche Lindauer Damenstift in 1313, to the Lords of Ittendorf in 1359, to the imperial city of Überlingen in 1434, to the Benedictine monastery of Einsiedeln in 1650, to the Konstanz monastery in 1693 and to Baden in 1803. In 1857 the community was assigned to the Überlingen district office and in 1973 to the Lake Constance district. On January 1, 1973, Ahausen was incorporated into Bermatingen. About 1000 people live in Ahausen. Disasters were a storm flood in 1906 and a severe hailstorm in 2009 that destroyed the fruit and field crops.

Half-timbered houses in Bermatingen

Bermatinger Torkel, a historic tree press
  • The well-preserved historical center of Bermatingen is a listed building as a whole (see: Bermatingen complex ). Part of the ensemble are numerous old half-timbered houses : the oldest building existed as early as 1390, today's "Landgasthof Zum Adler" (once a pub and at the same time an official building). The Gothic church of St. George was built around 1390 and consecrated in 1422. It has a Romanesque tower, a distinctive gable, partly baroque interior and extensive fresco paintings and sculptures by Feuchtmeyer , Zürn and Morinck . A historical monument is the Kehlhof, a half-timbered farm behind the town hall, which was the headquarters of the leader Eitelhans Ziegelmüller from Oberteuringen with eleven of his peasant leaders during the Peasants' War from March to April 1525 . The rectory was built in 1746–1747 by Peter Thumb .
  • The castle Bermatingen , mentioned around 1166, was the seat of the Lords of Bermatingen, cupbearer of Ittendorf and the lords of Hörningen to Beyenburg. It was destroyed in the Peasants' War and can only be seen today as a wall-ditch facility in what is now the Oberwald.
  • The former Weppach Monastery ("am Weppachbach") in the forest towards Autenweiler was owned by Beguines, later Franciscan Terziarinnen. The monastery was first mentioned in a document in 1424 and dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization. The restored monastery church, built in 1781, is now privately owned.
  • The Bermatinger Torkel , the last surviving historical wine press, has been at the entrance to the village since 1991 and reminds us that there were still at least eight Torkels in Bermatingen in the 19th century and 360,000 liters of wine were produced in good wine years.
  • The Bermatinger Höhle is a man-dug sandstone cave that was discovered by chance in 1840. Its purpose and age are uncertain. It may have been used as early as the Middle Ages. The cave explorer Lambert Karner examined the cave in 1900 and compiled several reports. One of these reports mentions that the cave also served as a secret place for religious customs of pagans, as the customs were "forbidden under the reign of Charlemagne" under severe punishment.
  • Peters Brünnele is a small fountain surround in the middle of the Bermatinger Oberwald.

Ahausen district

  • In the district of Ahausen there is the St. Jakobus chapel from the 10th to 12th centuries. The core of the late Gothic chapel is Romanesque and has some very well-preserved Gothic frescoes. In an arson attack in 1634 during the Thirty Years' War by Swedish soldiers, it could not be destroyed because of the massive construction.
  • Of the two mill buildings still preserved today, the “lower mill” received the harvest of the unfree peasants, while the “upper mill” with its magnificent half-timbered building only received the harvest of the free peasants.

Regular events

The Alemannic carnival is an important part of life in Bermatingen. The symbol of the Bermatinger Bear Guild is the Bermatinger Bear in the Fasnetshäs. A fountain figure in front of the Bermating primary school at the train station depicts him. It is a work by the Bermatingian artist Erich Kaiser, who also created lasting values with his figure of St. George and the Passion relief. In addition, there are the wine festival, the Moschtfest, the Torkelfest, the holiday town of Bärenhausen for children, the craft markets, the Bermatinger Advent calendar and music events throughout the year.
