Baitenhausen pilgrimage church

The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church of Baitenhausen is located almost 500  m above the village center of Baitenhausen , a district of Meersburg in the Lake Constance district . She bears the patronage of Mary to Mount Carmel ( Scapular Festival , July 16).

The church is on the route of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route . From the west side of the church there is a wide view of the Salem valley . The inn next to the pilgrimage church was built in 1712.

history

Franz Konrad von Rodt, painting by Angelika Kauffmann

The baroque-style church is said to have been donated by Prince-Bishop Marquard Rudolf von Rodt in thanks for his rescue from distress at sea. His coat of arms and the year 1702 above the entrance door to the church still remind of him. The church was consecrated in 1704. The construction work was carried out more intensively again during the reign (1750–1775) of his nephew Franz Konrad von Rodt .

Altars

The church has four altars. The high altar shows the statue of Our Lady in front of the bright yellow window. Above himself the Holy Spirit and above a star ("Maris stella - sea star"). To the right of the nave is the Wendelin altar with a wooden image of the saint. Right in front of it is the holy cross altar with cross, globe and the symbol of God. The cross altar contains a breakthrough for a clear view of the Wendelin chapel behind it. On the left in the nave is the Joseph Altar with a statue of Joseph.

painting

The two ceiling paintings with landscapes by Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner (1760) are worth seeing. The history of the origins of the chapel is shown: salvation and thanks for the salvation of the prince-bishop. The scenes were later commissioned by his nephew, Prince-Cardinal Franz Konrad von Rodt.

The cause of the building is shown in the fresco on the ceiling of the left transept . The prince-bishop is on his way across Lake Constance from Konstanz to his residence in Meersburg. There are two fragile boats with passengers on Lake Constance. In distress at sea, he calls on God for help. The scene is shown as he is now heading for Meersburg again with a smooth sea and moonlight. Meersburg is shown here as it was built in 1750. The writing on the ceiling is a praise to Mary: "Beautiful as the moon".

In the ceiling fresco of the right transept the finding of the place where the chapel is to be built is shown. The prince-bishop stands on a hill above Baitenhausen and shows a shepherd the building site. An approaching thunderstorm passes through the intercession of the Virgin Mary. The situation is shown with the praising prince-bishop on the hill, the future location of the church. When the sun is shining, it is built on the view to the northeast into its dominion with the silhouette of Bermatingen , Markdorf and Ittendorf Castle. The writing on the ceiling praises Mary as “chosen as the sun”.

Pictures and sculptures from other chapels

Altars and figures of saints were transferred from the old chapel in the village: on the left wall in front of the high altar the plague saint Rochus with a staff from the 2nd half of the 17th century, on the right wall in front of the high altar Sebastian from the 1st century who was pierced by arrows. Half of the 17th century. The painting of the Assumption of Mary by J. Esperlin comes as a gift from the royal family from the Heiligenberg Castle Chapel. The chapel organ was bought by the Meersburg seminary in 1891.

Eternal light

The "Eternal Light" is a foundation by Therese-Louise Freifrau Droste zu Hülshoff , b. von Haxthausen (noble family) (1772–1853), mother of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff , who occasionally visited Meersburg Castle .

Pilgrimages

The days of pilgrimage are

  • the second Sunday of July: Skapulierfest of the Carmelite Order
  • October 20: Wendelin Day

The pastor of Hagnau in the years 1869–1884, Heinrich Hansjakob , made a pilgrimage with the Hagnau family to the Mother of God Chapel in Baitenhausen every year in May.

Scapular festival

The scapular was an item of clothing for monks. For Maria it was a (protective) coat. The knightly order of Mary of Mount Carmel was founded on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. The Scapular Festival is a patronage festival for Maria vom Berg Karmel, to whom the church in Baitenhausen is consecrated. A procession takes place at the Scapular Festival.
