Marquard Rudolf Reichsritter von Rodt zu Bußmannshausen , also Roth , (born April 9, 1644 in Konstanz , † July 10 or October 6, 1704 in Hegne near Konstanz) was Prince-Bishop of Konstanz from 1689 to 1704 .

family

Marquard Rudolf von Rodt came from the Upper Swabian knightly noble family of the Barons von Rodt zu Bußmannshausen . His father was Johann Dietrich, captain of knights and inheritance of the Kempten monastery; his mother was Maria Barbara von Westerstetten.

He was the first of three members of his family to become bishops of Konstanz (after him Franz Konrad von Rodt and Maximilian Christof von Rodt ).

Life

Marquard Rudolf was admitted to the Konstanz Cathedral Chapter as an exhibitor in 1653 . He made his first profession in 1666 and studied at the University of Strasbourg from 1666 . After subdiaconate and diaconate he was admitted to the chapter (second profession). He was ordained a priest on May 26, 1668 . From 1668 he was canon in Augsburg and from 1660 through episcopal nomination also in Konstanz as well as cathedral cantor (1673), archdeacon (1683) and from 1686 cathedral dean at the Konstanzer Münster . In 1686 he became President of the Spiritual Council in Constance.

On April 14, 1689, he was elected Bishop of Constance in the third ballot with a narrow majority against the candidate of the Viennese court, Johannes Wolfgang von Bodman , and was confirmed by Pope Alexander VIII on March 6, 1690 . He was ordained bishop on June 18, 1690 by the Constance Auxiliary Bishop Johannes Wolfgang Reichsritter von Bodman ; A co-consecrator was the Augsburg auxiliary bishop Johannes Eustache Egolf Reichsritter von Westernach .

In addition to the office of bishop, he was "Lord of Reichenau (domini Augia maioris) and Öhningen".

His episcopal tenure was largely shaped by the political conflict with France. Furthermore, the interest debts of the imperial court at the bishopric put a strain on his work.

Marquard Rudolf died in Hegne Castle and was buried in the Konstanz Minster.
