List of the bishops of Constance
The list of bishops of Constance is made up of the prince-bishops of the Diocese of Constance . Especially for the early period of the diocese, which is dated to the late 6th century , the names and dates are not fully secured.
The prince-bishop was not only the supreme pastor of the diocese , but also secular ruler over the rather small and scattered territories of the prince-bishopric of Constance and therefore had a viril vote in the imperial council .
While the bishop was also the secular ruler of the city of Constance in the early Middle Ages , it became a free imperial city towards the end of the 12th century , which restricted the bishop's jurisdiction to a small area around the cathedral. Numerous bishops were therefore in conflict with the city. The cathedral chapter , too, often played out its position of power against the bishop. The seat of the bishops was the bishop's palace next to the Konstanz cathedral . During the Reformation the bishop moved his seat to Meersburg , where he stayed until the dissolution of the diocese by Pope Pius VII in 1821.
The bishop was normally elected by the cathedral chapter . Since the Pope and Emperor often tried to enforce their candidates - or even put them directly into office - there were occasional conflicts. Especially in the 11th-15th Century there were multiple occupations, so in the Investiture Controversy 1080–1112, in the double elections 1307, 1334, 1356, during the Occidental Schism 1384–1406, when the bishops of Pope and Antipope competed, and in the Constance diocese dispute 1474–1480.
Two of the Constance bishops, Konrad I and Gebhard II , were canonized in the 12th century and especially venerated in the diocese.
