Kasimir Anton von Sickingen , also Casimir Anton von Sickingen Baron von und zu Hohenburg , (born June 16, 1684 in Ebnet ; † August 29, 1750 ) was Prince-Bishop of Constance from 1743 to 1750 .

origin

Kasimir Anton Imperial Baron von Sickingen-Hohenburg came from the noble family von Sickingen and was the son of Baron Franz Ferdinand von Sickingen (1638-1687) and his wife Anna Maria Franziska Katharina von Dalberg († 1697). His great-grandfather Friedrich von Sickingen (1544–1581) was born as the grandson of the famous knight Franz von Sickingen (1481–1523).

Kasimir Anton had 11 siblings, including three clergymen and the imperial governor of Freiburg, Ferdinand Hartmann von Sickingen (1673–1743). The sister Maria Theresia (1682–1756) was the mother of the two later Konstanz cardinals Franz Konrad von Rodt (1706–1775) and Maximilian Christoph von Rodt (1717–1800), who became his episcopal successors as nephews. In the cathedral of Würzburg he founded, along with his brother Ferdinand Hartmann, his spiritual brothers Friedrich Johann Georg von Sickingen (1668-1719) and Franz Peter von Sickingen (1669-1736), a Bronzeepitaph.

Life

Sickingen entered the clergy, in 1699 he received the tonsure . He studied secular and canon law in Freiburg ( Baccalaureus there in 1700 ), Siena and Rome . After receiving the minor orders and the subdiaconate (1718), Kasimir Anton von Sickingen was promoted to cathedral capitular in 1720 and cathedral cantor in Mainz in 1743 . In Constance he received the Dompropstei in 1733 with imperial support . In 1727 he had a statue of St. Nepomuk erected on the Dreisam in his home town of Ebenet , and his dedication inscription has been preserved on the base.

Kasimir Anton was appointed Bishop of Constance on November 4, 1743. He was then ordained a priest on March 8, 1744 ; he was consecrated as bishop on August 30, 1744. He chose the New Castle in Meersburg as his bishopric , which was inaugurated in 1710 by one of his predecessors, Johann Franz Schenk von Stauffenberg . Under Sickingen's aegis , the episcopal residential palace was magnificently decorated. During his term of office the conclusion of the concordat between the prince abbey of St. Gallen and the diocese of Constance ended the ongoing dispute over the exemption of the monastery and its territory.

Kasimir Anton von Sickingen was buried in the Konstanz Minster, where the grave slab is also located. He had his heart buried in the local St. Hilary's Church in Ebnet .
