Constance diocese dispute
Because of the poor health of the Constance Bishop Hermann III. von Breitenlandenberg (1466–1474) appointed Pope Sixtus IV (1471–1484) at the beginning of September 1474 initially Ludwig von Freiberg as coadjutor of Bishop Hermann. Ludwig von Freiberg was to succeed Hermann in the episcopate in the event of Hermann's death. Hermann died shortly afterwards on September 18, 1474 and the Konstanz cathedral chapter , which had no knowledge of the election of the Pope, elected Otto von Sonnenberg by a majority on September 30, 1474 as successor to the late Bishop Hermann of Constance. This resulted in the Constance diocese dispute between the papal candidate and the candidate of the Constance cathedral chapter, also supported by Emperor Friedrich III. The diocese dispute also ruined the bishopric's weak finances.
Episcopate
On November 10, 1480 he was confirmed by Pope Sixtus IV. On March 31, 1481 Otto was ordained Bishop of Constance.
Bishop Otto von Sonnenberg managed to enforce new statutes for the Constance diocese through his restrictive approach . These were even used as models in the Diocese of Chur .
In 1487, Bishop Otto signed a contract between the Bishopric of Konstanz and the County of Heiligenberg-Werdenberg on the high, forest and low jurisdiction of Markdorf . After that, the area around the town of Markdorf, as well as the suburbs, the village, the floodplains, Möggenweiler, Bergheim and individual farms on the Gehrenberg were supposed to be subject to episcopal and municipal jurisdiction and the Counts of Heiligenberg-Werdenberg were to be withdrawn.
coat of arms
The coat of arms of the House of Waldburg-Sonnenberg belongs to the diocese coat of arms . The Waldburg family descends from the Hohenstaufer family, hence the three striding, black Staufer lions in gold; in the Sonneberg coat of arms in blue a golden sun over a silver three-mountain.
The grave inscription in Konstanz Minster shows the Sonnergian and Montfort coats of arms, the following Latin inscription: “Hoc. in. carcophago. condvntvr. ossa. Ottonis. antistes. qui. qvoudam. constautiensis. fuit. ex. Svoneberg nato. traxervnt. sva. fila. sorores. "
