Ludwig von Freiberg (* 1442; † before November 6, 1480 in Rome ) was the providential bishop of Constance from 1474 to 1480 .

origin

Ludwig was the son of the nobleman Michael von Freiberg and Helana von Berg. He began his studies in Pavia in 1455 , moved to Heidelberg in 1457 and to Basel in 1462 , where he obtained the degree of Baccalaureus Artium . Following the Dr. iur. utr. completed his studies, Ludwig was rector of the law faculty in Pavia from 1468 to 1469.

In 1459 he received the parish in Ehingen , in 1472 he stayed in Rome as envoy of the Tyrolean Duke Sigismund , where Pope Sixtus IV awarded him cathedral canons in Constance and Augsburg, but Ludwig was unable to obtain possession of them after his return.

Constance diocese dispute

On January 2, 1474, Pope Sixtus IV appointed him at the request of Duke Sigismund as coadjutor with the right of succession to the sick Bishop of Constance Hermann III. from Breitenlandenberg . Hermann died on September 18, 1474, and on September 30, 1474, the majority of the Konstanz Cathedral Chapter elected Otto von Sonnenberg as the successor of the deceased bishop in accordance with the Vienna Concordat of 1448 . This started the Constance diocese dispute . Pope Sixtus IV pointed out that the Concordat does not regulate the case of a coadjutor and insisted on the successor to Ludwig von Freiberg.

While Sigismund, who hoped for support in the recovery of Aargau and Thurgau, which had been lost to the Confederates, supported Ludwig von Freiberg, the Confederates were on Otto's side. The cathedral chapter appealed to the Pope to confirm his choice. An attempt by Ludwig in 1474 to penetrate the Constance Minster by force met resistance from the cathedral chapter, and the city of Constance did not support Ludwig either.

Emperor Friedrich III. awarded Otto the regalia in 1475 . When the emperor and pope agreed on a compromise in 1479, it was rejected by Ludwig, who traveled to Rome in 1480 to defend his claims. He died in Rome before November 6, 1480.
