Diethelm von Krenkingen (miniature 13th century)

Diethelm von Krenkingen ( mentioned for the first time in 1169 ; † April 12, 1206 in Salem Monastery ) was abbot of Rheinau Monastery from 1157 to 1161 , of Reichenau Monastery from 1169 to 1206 and Bishop of Konstanz from 1189 to 1206 .

Life

Diethelm von Krenkingen came from a noble family of the barons of Krenkingen who was wealthy between the southern Black Forest and the Randen . In a document from 1210 he names the Bishop of Salzburg Eberhard von Regensberg and the Bishop of Gurk Walther von Vatz as his maternal unions .

He was initially a monk of the Reichenau monastery. In 1169 he was appointed abbot of the Reichenau monastery by Friedrich Barbarossa . He went to Rome to Pope Urban III. (Pope from 1185 to 1187) and received the blessing and ordination as abbot. In 1189 Diethelm was appointed as the powerful abbot of Reichenau in personal union to the bishop of the diocese of Constance , the largest German diocese at the time. He was also a close political advisor to Philipp von Schwaben , the youngest son of Friedrich Barbarossa (from 1198 Roman-German king ). Diethelm von Krenkingen was entrusted with the administration of the Duchy of Swabia by Philipp in 1197 . Because of his political involvement and the proximity to the Hohenstaufen dynasty Diethelm was from 1201 to 1204 by Pope Innocent III. placed under church exemption. Diethelm von Krenkingen resigned from his bishopric in 1206.

Diethelm was particularly committed to the Cistercian Abbey in Salem , where he found his final resting place at his own request.
