Werner von Staufen , also Wernher von Staufen (* around 1170/75; † at the earliest in 1213 ) was Bishop of Constance from 1206 to 1209 .

Live and act

The family origin of Wernher von Staufen is unknown. The sources cannot prove that he belonged to the noble family of the Lords of Staufen , who lived in Staufen im Breisgau , but it is unlikely. Presumably he came from the ministerial family of the Lords of Arbon or a ministerial family residing at Staufen Castle near Engen .

Wernher von Staufen belonged to the Konstanz cathedral chapter at a young age , was first canon , archdeacon from 1200 , archipresbyter two years later and was unanimously elected Bishop of Constance by the cathedral chapter in April 1206. His choice fell at the time of the throne dispute between the Staufer Philip of Swabia , the youngest son of Friedrich Barbarossa , and Otto IV from the House of Welfs . Perhaps, like his predecessor Diethelm von Krenkingen , Wernher belonged to the Hohenstaufen camp, because otherwise it can hardly be explained that Pope Innocent III. , who had taken sides for the Guelphs, refused the unanimously elected Wernher the episcopal ordination. However, the poor source of information about Wernher's administration does not allow any clear statements as to whether he actually had a Staufer disposition.

After the assassination of Philip of Swabia, in 1208 the so-called Rheineck feud, the dispute between the diocese of Constance and the monastery of St. Gallen over control of Rheineck Castle , led to a bitter battle, which was decided in favor of the Constance diocese. Despite this victory, Wernher von Staufen resigned in 1209 from his office, which he had only given as an elect due to the refusal to bishop him.
