history

The publishing group was founded in 1970 in Frankfurt am Main by Peter Lang († 2001) , who came from a Swiss publishing family, as Peter Lang GmbH . A branch in Vienna soon followed. In 1977 the publishing activities were brought into the "Peter Lang AG", which was newly founded under Swiss law, and the headquarters were relocated to Bern. Further corporate offices are located in Brussels, Frankfurt am Main, New York, Oxford, Vienna and Warsaw.

The original company began as a publisher of dissertations and comparable academic publications in German, thus meeting the needs of German and Austrian scientists. Peter Lang Publishing Inc. , founded in 1982, is the North American branch of the Peter Lang Publishing Group. This New York City-based publisher specializes in the publication of monographs in the humanities and social sciences, as well as textbooks in education and media studies. The publishing house in Oxford with an additional branch in Ireland was founded in 1996. Another location was opened in Brussels in 1999 with “PIE-Peter Lang”.

After the publisher's death in 2001, the Peter Lang Children's Trust - a foundation established by Lang to promote educational and social projects - inherited the assets of Peter Lang and became the owner and sole shareholder of the publishing group. In 2015 the foundation decided to concentrate on its philanthropic tasks and to sell the company to the members of the board of directors and the management in a management buyout . The Peter Lang Children's Trust is still supported by the publishing group.

The German location of the publishing group was relocated from Frankfurt am Main to Berlin at the beginning of 2018 .
