John II of Constance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John II of Konstanz († February 9, 782 in Konstanz ) was abbot of the monasteries of St. Gallen and Reichenau and from 760 to 782 Bishop of Konstanz .

Johannes was initially a monk in Reichenau Abbey and was appointed abbot of St. Gallen Abbey by Bishop Sidonius after Otmar was captured in 759 . After July 4, 760 he also became abbot of the Reichenau monastery and bishop of Constance. He led the offices in personal union. According to the Reichenauer Necrologium, Johannes died on February 9, 782.

Act

As Abbot of St. Gallen , Johannes pursued a targeted property and acquisition policy in southern Breisgau , in eastern and southern Thurgau and on the other side of Lake Constance in Linzgau and Argengau . He established the connections to the goods south of Lake Constance by acquiring ownership in Romanshorn and Steinach near Arbon . The conditional gifts begin under Abbot Johannes, in which the donor keeps the property transferred to the monastery, but undertakes to pay annual interest. In this way relationships arose between the monastery and the people, which Abbot Johannes promoted and controlled in accordance with Frankish politics. The resulting increasing delimitation of the areas of influence of St. Gallen and Constance led to a contract between the abbey and the diocese, which was confirmed in 780 by Charlemagne . During the reign of Johannes as Abbot of St. Gallen, Winithar , the first head of the St. Gallen scriptorium and school known by name, worked.
