Peter von Reichenau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Petrus von Reichenau (* in the 8th century ; † February 21, 786 in Reichenau ) was abbot of the Reichenau monastery from 782 to 786 .

Live and act

Abbot Petrus came from the Agilolfinger family . He was initially a monk in Reichenau Monastery before he was elected abbot at an old age.

After the Bishops of Constance Arnefrid , Sidonius and Johannes simultaneously administered the Reichenau Monastery as abbots from 736, the separation of the Reichenau Abbey from the Diocese of Constance began with Petrus' Abbatiat . This regained independence could be successfully enforced not least because Gerold , the brother of Queen Hildegard and a close confidante and advisor of his brother-in-law Charlemagne , was a benefactor and donor of the island monastery and made numerous gifts to him.

Little is known about Peter's leadership as abbot. According to the report by Gallus Öhem, the chronicler of the Reichenau monastery, Peter was very learned and tried to increase the book holdings in the monastery library . For example, he brought a valuable Bible manuscript to his home monastery from a trip to Italy.
