Waldo of Reichenau
Waldo von Reichenau , also Walto (* around 740; † March 29/30, 814 or 815 in Saint-Denis near Paris ) was abbot of St. Gallen and Reichenau and administrator of the dioceses of Pavia and Basel .
Act
Waldo von Reichenau came from a high Franconian family. In 770 he was first attested in St. Gallen as a deacon and writer of documents. For the period from 770 to 779, 17 documents signed or written by him are known. He also made the first dorsal notes on the documents, which is where the orderly storage of the documents, the monastery archive, begins.
The St. Gallen monastery library owed him a substantial enrichment, as he was involved in the production of several codices.
In 782 Waldo was appointed abbot of the St. Gallen Monastery , which led to conflicts with Bishop Egino von Konstanz . Due to these differences, he probably had to resign his abbot in the first half of 784.
Subsequently, he is attested as a monk and from 786 to 806 as abbot of the Reichenau monastery on Lake Constance, where he ran a library and monastery school based on the St. Gallen model. Under his leadership, the Reichenau Monastery developed into an important cultural center in the Carolingian Empire , which is also reflected in the fact that Egino of Verona, on Waldo's permission, chose Reichenau as his retirement home.
As an educator and advisor to King Pippins , Waldo came to Pavia , where he was administrator of the diocese from 791–801. The same function was entrusted to him in the diocese of Basel from an indefinite period up to 802 or 805 . In 806 he was appointed imperial abbot and house bishop of the Abbey of Saint-Denis near Paris and died there on March 29 or 30, 814.
