Haito

Haito , also written Heito and Heitto (approx. 762 ; † March 17, 836 ), was an abbot in the Reichenau monastery from the Alemannic language . From 805 to 823 he was Bishop of Basel .

Abt Haito came as five years of convent school on the island of Reichenau and is one of the most important abbots of the monastery. Under him the new building of the Reichenau Marienmünster was carried out, which is still preserved today, especially the crossing system . The maintenance and expansion of the library can also be traced back to Haito's work. He also arranged for a copy of the so-called St. Gallen monastery plan.

As a bishop , Haito was the builder of the founding building of the Basel cathedral , for which he donated an altar ciborium. He issued the first diocesan statutes , the Capitualria ecclesiastica, which laid down the norms of conduct and official duties of the clergy and the liturgy throughout the diocese and also gave instructions for the instruction of the laity.

Haito was one of Charlemagne's confidants , as his failed diplomatic trip to Byzantium in 811 proves. He was also one of the witnesses who signed Charles' will in 1811. The St. Gallen monk Notker Balbulus (approx. 840-912) describes him in his Gesta Karoli Magni ("Deeds of Charlemagne") in a largely stylized report of the arrival of a Byzantine embassy at the imperial court as one of the pillars of Charles:

"There was now the glorious Karl at a bright window, shining like the sun at sunrise, adorned with gold and precious stones, supported by Heitto, that was the name of the bishop whom he had once sent to Constantinople."

In 823 Haito resigned from all his offices in order to spend his old age as a simple monk on the Reichenau.
