Politics and world events
Abbasid Empire
- July 30 ; Caliph Al-Mansur founds Madīnat as-Salām ("City of Peace"), later Baghdad , as the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate . Damascus loses its capital city function.
- Under the leadership of Muhammad an-Nafs al-Zakīya of the Hasanid family , a rebellion of Shiites in Hejaz begins against the Abbasid rule in Baghdad . On September 22nd, Muhammad took the city of Medina by surprise. Numerous important personalities of the city, including the legal scholar Mālik ibn Anas , join him. A little later, Mecca and Basra are also conquered. On December 6th, however , the uprising was put down by an Abbasid army and Muhammad was killed in battle.
