Location of Wetteldorf in Rhineland-Palatinate |
Wetteldorf is a part of the community Schönecken in the Rhineland-Palatinate Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm . Wetteldorf was an independent municipality until 1960.
geography
Wetteldorf is located in the Eastern Eifel on the southern edge of the Prümer Kalkmulde . The residential areas Auf dem Bellert, Hauenborn, Herchenbach and Irsfelderhof also belong to the Wetteldorf district . Geography is important because the 1937 Wetteldorfer directional cut opened up the geological stratification that determines the Eifelium , the stratum that separates the Middle Devon from the Lower Devon. The boundary identified by fossil conodonts was declared the reference line by the International Commission on Stratigraphy in 1981. The cut is protected by the Ludwig-Happel-Hütte, which was built in the 1990s, and is occasionally the scene of geological research.

Wetteldorf was first mentioned in a document on August 13, 762 as "Wathilendorp in pago Carosco" ( Karosgau ), when King Pippin of the Prüm Abbey confirmed their possessions. In the Prümer Urbar from the year 893 the place was named "Wettellendorpht". In 1222 Caesarius remarked that the whole place with all its accessories had already been assigned to the hospital by the abbey's founders. The rights of the hospital were confirmed again in a division agreement from 1291.
