Jonathan Steinberg

Jonathan Steinberg (born March 8, 1934 in New York City ) is an American modern historian. He holds the Walter H. Annenberg Professorship in European Modern History at the University of Pennsylvania .

Life

Steinberg studied history at Harvard University and received his doctorate from the University of Cambridge , where he was also a lecturer and reader in European history for 33 years . He is a Fellow of Trinity Hall . He then taught as a professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania. The focus of his academic work has been on European history since the beginning of the French Revolution, with particular attention to the history of the Axis powers Germany, Austria and Italy and the fate of the Jewish population in these countries on their way to the Holocaust . The Deutsche Bank commissioned him to process their gold deals during World War II . His Bismarck biography Bismarck - A Life , published in 2011, was reviewed by Henry Kissinger in The New York Times Book Review .

Steinberg was a conversation partner in the documentary drama Bismarck - Hardness and Sensibility (2014) shot for ZDF and in an episode of Alexander Kluge's culture magazine 10 to 11 .
