Seiwerath is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the municipality of Prüm and is located in the center of a triangle between Prüm , Gerolstein and Bitburg .
geography
The village of Seiwerath is located in the Prümer Kalkmulde region, which still belongs to the Eastern Eifel , the southern municipal area is already on the "Lascheider plateau" in the Western Eifel . The community also includes the Dürrbach, Gerstenbergerhof and Herchenberg residential areas . The hamlet of Schartzberg is partly on the district of Wawern .
history
The place is located on the former military road of the Romans Trier-Cologne and was already settled in Roman times. As evidenced by the place-name broadcast, the establishment of today's village indicates a clearing settlement from around the year 1000. The place is first mentioned in 1570 as Syvert . It belongs to the end of the 18th century to Schultheißerei Wetteldorf in kurtrierischen Office Prüm . Under French administration in the early 19th century, Seiwerath was part of the canton of Prüm in the Saardepartement and under Prussia it belonged to the mayor's office of Schönecken .

regional customs
On Easter Monday, Seiwerath is the destination of the Schönecker Eierlage , an Easter tradition documented since 1764, but probably much older. Starting from Schönecken , runners have to cover a total of 7.2 km in order to receive a confirmation from the barrier recipient in Seiwerath. He is in competition with the packer , who has to collect a set number of eggs at the same time in Schönecken.
In addition, during Holy Week, from Maundy Thursday, the children go " rattling " and replace the church bells before Easter.
Also important is the Sunday after Carnival, on which winter is symbolically burned ( straw man ). In addition to the St. Martin procession , the maypole is also set up on the night of May 1st every year .
