Wawern is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Prüm .
Geographical location
Wawern lies on the edge of the Islek of the Eifel - Ardennes (near the border with Belgium and Luxembourg ) between Bitburg and Prüm, not far from the Nims .

history
middle Ages
- 1068 first documented mention.
Modern times
- 1576 Wawern became part of the Electorate of Trier following the takeover of the Principality of Prüm by the Electors of Trier .
- In 1794 the Left Bank of the Rhine was taken over by French revolutionary troops .
- 1798 Wawern belongs to the French Republic ( arrondissement Prüm in the Saardepartement ) and is administered by the Mairie Burbach .
- 1802 Wawern is assigned to the Lasel parish .
- In 1815 the Rhineland and with it the Eifel were assigned to Prussia .
20th century
- 1930 New construction of the chapel (patrons: St. Apollonia , St. Donatus , St. 14 Holy Helpers ).
- 1947 Wawern and part of the Eifel now belong to the new state of Rhineland-Palatinate .
- 1969 Dissolution of the village schools
- 1971 Wawern is assigned to the community of Prüm after the district reform .
With the abolition of border controls and the single currency in the European Union , the places in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm are no longer restricted by their border location. The cooperation and connections to the places in Luxembourg and East Belgium ( eastern cantons ) have been made much easier since then.

Municipal council
The council in Wawern consists of six council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the honorary mayor as chairman. Until 2009, the council had eight council members.
