history
The place name on "-rath" suggests that the village was founded around 900–1000 AD. In 1445 the place was first mentioned in a document as "Watzenrode". With the construction and commissioning of the Gerolstein – St. Vith experienced a slight upswing in Watzerath. Around 1900 Watzerath received its own ticket office and later its own train station. Passenger traffic on the railway line was stopped in 1973. Today the place is largely agricultural.
Water supply
The beginnings of the Prüm district waterworks go back to 1927. Even if the name "Schneifel-Gruppewasserwerk" was used for the first larger project of a central group water supply in the Prüm district and the sponsorship was initially with the mayor's office at the time, Nederprüm-Pronsfeld, this planned group can easily be seen as the cornerstone of the district waterworks .
1927–1945: The first section ran from 1927 to 1944 and was under the direction of the then district architect Thur during construction, from around 1939 onwards. During these years Schlemmer was district administrator for the Prüm district. As can be seen from the old files, there was a lively correspondence about the planning and the efforts to finance and implement the measure. The following is a transcript of the meeting from February 2, 1927:
“On February 2, 1927, the community representatives of the communities of Niedermehlen, Steinmehlen, Weinsfeld, Watzerath, Pittenbach, Pronsfeld, Lünebach and Strickscheid met in Watzerath to discuss a lecture by the mayor Mangold from Prüm and Dipl.-Ing. Endris from Gerolstein to discuss the construction of a group waterworks on the basis of the preliminary draft also available to the government. In principle, they were ready to carry out the intended measure with a total expenditure of around 260,000 RM if the German Empire, the Prussian State and the Rhine Province granted the municipalities sufficient funds to secure the financing. "( Geschichtsverein Prüm )
